Dania Shapes

Dania Shapes

”Maximum, damaged, audio, bologna, face, and party”. This is the response I got when asking Dan Lopatin for 6 adjectives that describe his project, Dania Shapes. (Look dude, I am new to writing and you’re not making this any easier on me.)

Anyhow, Hampshire College-educated (surprise!) and Terry Riley influenced Lopatin is a loveable, down to earth fellow who, given a long enough extension cord would be living in the woods in a cabin filled with Juno 60s, John Carpenter movies on VHS, and Dan Szymanowski’s artwork. Until then, he’ll have to settle with having a lab in Somerville and CD/Rs being released in Germany.

At any moment, members of Healing Feeling, or Lasercoffin, may stop in to perform with/as Dania Shapes but Lopatin is clearly the cartographer. Taking nods from Eno, Oval, Tim Hecker, and R. Stevie Moore, the end result is a mix of drone, soothing ambient, digital glitch, often playing with the concepts of pop and nostalgia. Or, straight from the horse’s mouth: “I just like a lot of weird shit and then I get over it.”

Tonight Dania Shapes is at P.A.’s Lounge alongside Japan’s lo-fi singer-songwriter PWRFL Power, whose songs are warm, innocent, and endearing; and Turtle Shell – which features members of Guillermo Sexo.

Hearthrob

While this post was initially just about Dania Shapes, it simply wouldn’t be right for me to deprive you of this next little morsel. Big Digits, the unstoppable two-man party extravaganza, shall be dropping “mad beats” live at the Middlesex Lounge alongside resident DJ Redd Foxxworth for the 2007 kickoff of Hearthrob. Juiceboxxx and Dre Skull will be performing early so do be on time. Here’s a Juiceboxxx video on YouTube. Wear bright colours, dance on a rainbow.
