What’s the dif between your other night, Paper, and Throwed? And, do you ever feel pigeonholed due to core audience and press reaction to Paper?

PAPER is a weekly Thursday night Party at Bills Bar, where I am the resident DJ. I partially feel that people think I’m an indie DJ because of the way that Paper is branded, but I spin a wider range – including a lot of great remixes by Digitalism, Boys Noize, Switch, MSTRKRFT, Justice, etc. Right now, my favourite stuff is coming from the French House scene.

THROWED is a monthly with Chris Devlin (from Spank Rock) & myself, and the music range is broader – for example this month guests Red Foxx (Hearthrob) & David Day (Make It New) are guest DJs. Texas Mike, Lauren Devain, & Lindsay Broekel also help by being hosts for Throwd. Expect more party music, as Devlin heads up the Baltimore Club / vintage jams department.

Well if that’s the case, color me a tastemaker because I’ve been a weekend hermit since the days got shorter. Who knew my low serotonin levels would finally come into vogue in 2007! Anyhow, if you’d like to follow this F*ck the Weekend trend, I’d suggest taking a gander at your old friend, Wednesday.

This Year’s Model

With Blackout Bar long gone, Regeneration Records closed, and O’Brien’s Pub being boarded-up for renovations until sometime in February – there’s been little room for a cheap cover, beer-pounding, punk rock without frills kind of night in Allston. But as the saying goes, necessity breeds invention, and Dave Unger of Antler has pulled a wildcard from his beard right when Boston needs it most. Under the moniker DJ Ungertaker, he’s starting “Band at The Model”; a weekly Wednesday night DJ and band event at The Model Café that has the potential to fill all previously mentioned voids. Tonight the series gets kicked off by as set from The Murder Mile, and like many other things in Allston the first one’s free.

Rubbed the Right Way

Named after Claude’s long-standing mix-CD series, Soul Touch takes place at Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge each Wednesday night. Tonight there’s a special guest in the house, Cosmo Baker of The Rub (NYC) who, I very much expect will “bring the party” as the kids say.
Dania Shapes

”Maximum, damaged, audio, bologna, face, and party”. This is the response I got when asking Dan Lopatin for 6 adjectives that describe his project, Dania Shapes. (Look dude, I am new to writing and you’re not making this any easier on me.)

Anyhow, Hampshire College-educated (surprise!) and Terry Riley influenced Lopatin is a loveable, down to earth fellow who, given a long enough extension cord would be living in the woods in a cabin filled with Juno 60s, John Carpenter movies on VHS, and Dan Szymanowski’s artwork. Until then, he’ll have to settle with having a lab in Somerville and CD/Rs being released in Germany.

At any moment, members of Healing Feeling, or Lasercoffin, may stop in to perform with/as Dania Shapes but Lopatin is clearly the cartographer. Taking nods from Eno, Oval, Tim Hecker, and R. Stevie Moore, the end result is a mix of drone, soothing ambient, digital glitch, often playing with the concepts of pop and nostalgia. Or, straight from the horse’s mouth: “I just like a lot of weird shit and then I get over it.”

Tonight Dania Shapes is at P.A.’s Lounge alongside Japan’s lo-fi singer-songwriter PWRFL Power, whose songs are warm, innocent, and endearing; and Turtle Shell – which features members of Guillermo Sexo.

While this post was initially just about Dania Shapes, it simply wouldn’t be right for me to deprive you of this next little morsel. Big Digits, the unstoppable two-man party extravaganza, shall be dropping “mad beats” live at the Middlesex Lounge alongside resident DJ Redd Foxxworth for the 2007 kickoff of Hearthrob. Juiceboxxx and Dre Skull will be performing early so do be on time. Then Joseph began playing all this Italo and obscurer-than-obscure disco music which I wasn’t down for. Like school-children fighting for the right to pick first in kickball, we had some choice words on the matter and either he quit or I fired him.

I believe he was upset at being limited to specific genres (and my constantly referring to 12”s as LPs) and I chewed him out for not being able to mix. Fast-forward a few years to where Joseph can mix, and a less-cocky Sisto happens to like Italo, and we’re back in action. So now, without further ado: the first in a hopefully long-series of Monday Mixes for Scene Feeder. Someone give this guy a Friday night already.

Belated Happy New Year. Ben Sisto here. Today marks the beginning of the Scene Feeder blog being part of the Dig family. Big thanks to the top dogs here who have made this happen. I felt unsure about my future as a blogger, but, like everyone, that whole Time “Person of the Year” thing gave me a real blast of confidence to the face, and I simply had to say yes to this opportunity. Scene Feeder will be popping up a few times a week with all sorts of ideas concerning what the hell you should do with yourself. I will try to be brief and to the point, but humor my occassional rambles and we’ll get along fine.

First things first, U.V. Protection played on the steps of the Boston Public Library for First Night, which was pretty fucking cool. There are photos to prove the coolness. The half electronic-dance-opera and half performance-art set seemed to go over well with the thousands of easily frightened suburban onlookers, despite some timing confusion with the countdown itself. But that news is now 1,000 days old, internet-time. Moving on…

In holy shit news, on Saturday, 1.6.07 Missing Persons featuring Dale Bozzio play at the Middle East Downstairs. Perhaps dancing to Soul isn’t your thing, but “Walking in L.A.” is. If so, do check out Warren Cuccurullo (see Frank Zappa, Duran Duran) and company.

[Middle East Downstairs, 480 Mass. Ave., Central Square, Cambridge. 617.864.EAST. 8PM doors/18+/$12 (adv), $15 (dos)]

International comfort-foods, 22 quality beers on tap, craft-beers, “No Bud”, homemade grenadine, and hand-pickled olives might not be the first things that pop into mind when hearing the phrase “new restaurant / bar in Allston”, but the former GM (Aaron Sanders), bar manager (Max Toste) and chef (Chef Josh) of Bukowski’s Tavern in Cambridge have crossed the river to give it their best shot. Deep Ellum (named for a region of Dallas) will occupy the former Reel Bar space and opens this weekend. Casey Keenan, a bartender at Deep Ellum (and yet another Bukowski’s-export) describes the general vibe as a “comfortable, old-fashioned feel.” Then again, he also spoke of playing the Load Records DVD on the flatscreen, so expect plenty of pleasing contrasts. I will tell you how the Sidecars and Manhattans are as soon as I learn a thing or two about either.

Let it be know that Scene Feeder will not exclusively be some sort of houndingly obnoxious ‘you heard it first’ kind of deal. Sometimes it’s good to give little reminders about why Boston is such a great city. With that in mind:
Soul-le-lu-jah with DJ Claude Money takes place every Saturday night at ZuZu in Cambridge. Anyone who has ever said the phrase ‘I like to dance” would be wise to attend.

Enjoy your weekend, kids.

Scene Feeder will be officially back on January 1st 2007 as part of The Weekly Dig. I was going to call it quits, but after Time Magazine named me person of the year, The Dig asked me to join their staff as a freelancer. I am very pleased to be part of The Dig family, and hope that this humble blog among many gets some info out that’s worth knowing. In real-press news, Scene Feeder was mentioned in the November 2006 issue of Nylon Magazine (even got a little photo of yours truely in there), alongside Oliver Mak, U.V. Protection, and other local upstarts.

New & Old Friends: Joseph Colbourne will be back with Scene Feeder – so each Monday he’ll have a hot new mix of Italo, 80s, Garage / Loft style dance jams to get you through the work week. Once a week Daniel Lopatain of Dania Shapes will be talking about vintage synth and electronic audio gear, with videos and examples. Other than that expect regular postings about DJ nights, venues, underground bands, art shows, and other ‘generally interesting’ things.

Also, party pics, because everyone loves party pics.

Cheers,
Ben
